(A. Morissette)
Ironic, can be found on the record "Jagged Little Pill". Definitely
my favorite. The tab was posted recently, Jeff has done an excellent
job transcribing it, please give him a hand everybody.
Please find attached the original post.
Rgds, Chris

Ironic
by Alanys Morrisette
transcribed by Jeff Elkins <jeff.elkins@nashville.com>
The key and the lyrics were previously posted by Evan C. Parker
<ecpark@mail.wm.edu> - all credit where credit is due. Evan's version
called for no capo, I've added a capo at the 4th fret.
Performance Notes:
Play the verses and bridge with a light, syncopated fingerpicking style -
the chorus is about 4 guitars (overdubbed), so I've diagrammed a couple of
possibilities. Don't let the F#'s, etc. scare you off of this one... it's
really just a combination of folk chords with a capo at the 4th fret.
* = fretted note play all strings marked "o", mute (or don't
@ = optional addition play) strings marked "x"
**Capo at 4th fret.

Chorus Chords (for one or more guitars)
Guitar 1 (capo at 4th fret) - This is what I play when solo. The chords
above in parentheses are what the chords would be if the capo were the nut.

VERSE1:
F#/A# B2 F#/A# G#m
An old - man turned ninety-eight
F#/A# B2 F#/A# G#m
He won the lotter-y and died the next day
F#/A# B2 F#/A# G#m
It's a black fly in your chardonnay
F#/A# B2 F#/A# G#m
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
F#/A# B2 F#/A# G#m
Isn't it i-ronic... don't you think?
CHORUS:
F#5 B5 F#5 G#5(m)
It's like ra-i-ain - on your wedding day
F#5 B5 F#5 G#5(m)
It's a free ride - when you've already paid
F#5 B5 F#5 G#5(m)
It's the good ad-vice - that you just didn't take
A E F#
And who would have thought... it figures
VERSE1:
Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good-bye
He waited his whole damn life just to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought, "Well isn't this nice..."
And isn't it ironic... don't you think?
-CHORUS-
BRIDGE:
EMaj7
Well life has a funny way
F#4,6 G#m
Of sneaking up on you when you think everything is okay and
EMaj7 F#4,6
Everything's going right
EMaj7
And life has a funny way
F#4,6 G#m
Of helping you out when you think everything's gone wrong and
EMaj7 F#4,6
Everything blows up in your face
VERSE3:
A traffic - jam when you are already late
A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It's like meeting the man of your dreams then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn't it ironic... don't you think?
A little too ironic... and yeah I really do think...
-CHORUS-
OUTRO:
EMaj7 F#4,6 G#m
Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
EMaj7 F#4,6 EMaj7
Life has a funny, funny way of helping you out
EMaj7
Helping you out
Here's a thought: Try playing the G#m with 16th fret harmonics on the
upper 4 strings.
Again, this song is not as hard as I made it look. As always,
corrections/additions always welcome.
